Most of what makes event security work is decided weeks earlier. Who gets in, how they are searched, where the pinch points are and what happens if something goes wrong should all be agreed on paper first.
Licensing matters. SIA rules require a door supervisor licence for anyone guarding a venue or site covered by a premises licence or temporary event notice for alcohol or regulated entertainment, such as live music, while it is open to the public and those activities are running. Not every event role needs a licence. Showing guests to seats, toilets and first aid is stewarding. Searching bags, refusing entry, removing someone or stepping into trouble in a crowd is security work for a licensed officer. Larger public events in Birmingham may be referred to the city council's Safety Advisory Group, which brings the council, the emergency services and the organiser's team together, security included.
